East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin joined us to celebrate St George’s Day at the George Hotel in Stamford.
Our Members and their guests enjoyed a three-course lunch followed by a rousing singsong of British classic tunes including Jerusalem and Rule Britannia, with accompaniment from a local jazz band.
Emma, who is chair of the Commonwealth Forum in Brussels, inspired Biz Club members with a positive and upbeat speech about Brexit, which will make the UK a more prosperous and secure country which young people can be proud of.
A major part of Emma’s role is working with top negotiators in the world to sell UK business abroad, including the 53 Commonwealth countries with a population of 2.4 billion people, almost a third of the world’s population.
Emma is passionate about the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. She said: “Brexit is a tremendous opportunity for Global Britain to champion globalisation and work with developing countries to alleviate poverty through an inclusive free trade agenda.”
Emma believes it’s vital that businesses are ready on day one after the UK leaves the EU. “We need to be ahead of the curve by opening new international markets to unlock the huge potential for businesses that will see 90 per cent being made outside the EU.”
Biz Club President Geoffrey Pointon said: “This is the seventh year the Biz Club has celebrated St George’s Day at The George Hotel. It was fitting to have our local MEP as our guest speaker. Emma’s speech inspired Biz Club members with confidence about global opportunities for British business post Brexit.”
